Bible Study Basics for Beginners

The Bible can feel impossibly large the first time you open it. The good news: nobody reads it cover to cover on their first pass, and you do not have to either.

Pick a translation that fits how you read

English Bibles fall on a spectrum from word-for-word (more literal, sometimes wooden) to thought-for-thought (smoother, slightly interpretive). The NIV and CSB sit in the middle. The ESV leans literal; the NLT leans readable. The KJV is poetic but uses 400-year-old English. None are wrong — pick the one you will actually open.

Where to start

Most pastors recommend the Gospel of John for first-time readers — it is the most accessible introduction to who Jesus claimed to be. After that, Genesis, then Mark, then Romans gives you a structural overview of the Bible whole storyline in about 80 chapters.

The S.O.A.P. method

  • Scripture — read a short passage (5–15 verses).
  • Observation — what does it say? Who is speaking, who is listening, what is happening?
  • Application — what does this mean for how I live today?
  • Prayer — talk to God about it.

This works equally well for solo time and small-group discussion.

Join a study group

Most churches run weekly Bible studies — many in homes, some online. They are the single best way to stay consistent and learn from people who have been at it longer than you. Check the events section for studies in your area.
